What should I do when I do not understand my assignment?

My assignment question is confusing, and I am not sure what my teacher wants me to write about. Some students talked about assignment help while discussing difficult homework questions. I want to understand the question before I start writing because I do not want to go in the wrong direction. I have read it several times already. How do you break down a confusing assignment question?
